Old Barker FC (OBFC) had 112 registered players in 2015, providing footballing opportunities for men and women of all standards. We attribute the clubs continued growth to the aesthetic appeal of the beautiful game and stable club management, with Peter Gregory’s tenure as club President outlasting the last three Prime Ministers combined!
2015 was an eventful year. A year plagued by injuries saw the division 5 men’s squad, despite a valiant effort, unable to avoid relegation. The squad’s performance was also hampered when manager Jonathon Herdman followed his heart to South America and did not return…
The ladies played some classy and elegant football earning them a top four finish and a narrow semi-final defeat. Growing in confidence, the women’s squad intends to push for promotion in season 2016. Eva Akopian this year picked up the top club honour, the Presidents Cup, for her outstanding contribution to the club and development of women’s football. The other top gong, the Craig Harris Shield, went to Andrew Taylor for his significant contribution to both football and club management.
The division 6 lads entered the season with a socially competitive attitude. Social civilities aside, when the lads stepped into the football arena, they battled spectacularly. If not for a mid-season festival sabbatical, the squad would have easily secured promotion, finishing a mere one point off the pace when all chips were counted.
At the pointy end of the club, the Premier League men’s team executed the most daring “great escape” since the 1963 cinematic masterpiece. Nabbing two wins from their final two games, the Premier League squad avoided relegation and are well-positioned to climb the league ladder next year.
We are excited for the promise of a tremendous 2016. With a great balance of football and social activities, if you are interested in joining us, come down to a pre-season in February.
